The Call:
SHADE, a Honolulu-based collaborative design practice and training institute, is seeking select applicants in the fields of architecture and landscape architecture who have high levels of capability, interest and leadership potential in the area of public interest design related to urbanism and housing.
About SHADE:
SHADE stands for sustainable, humanitarian, architecture and design for the earth. Since 2015, the SHADE Institute, a non-profit subsidiary of SHADE, began its intern training and mentorship program which has collaborated with state and local governments, community organizations, and local planning and design professionals to provide urban and architectural analysis and design for transit oriented districts (TOD) on Oahu. SHADE Institute is funded by grants from the State of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu, and numerous private donors and partners.
Terms of Internship:
SHADE will provide a stipend based on the selected applicant’s experience and financial need. The time period of this experience is for a minimum of 10 weeks and may be extended if project funding and intern interest/performance is positive. Applicants will be responsible for return travel to Hawaii and eight weeks of room/board. SHADE will provide housing options for interns to secure. SHADE programs are IDP and AIA CEU eligible.
Minimum Requirements:
Interns who are currently enrolled with advanced standing and/or recently graduated from an accredited professional university graduate or undergraduate program in architecture or landscape architecture. Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated leadership potential and seeking a career in public interest/community-based practice. Prior professional experience preferred.
