In the summer of 2015, SHADE Institute began its public interest design initiative in Honolulu’s most distinctive historic district. The Chinatown Urban Acupuncture Project, is a community-based effort to visualize this already vital area as a transit-oriented district. SHADE fellows worked with community stakeholders and government officials to produce a vision plan, which includes 12 site-specific project proposals cited as priorities by the Chinatown community members. The timeline below overviews our ongoing work with the Chinatown community, which includes the River Walk Revitalization study.
